wooden box THE UNITED STATES

map of N. America puzzle

There is not much to go on here. The lid is all that remains of the box and there are no identifying marks on the puzzle. The lid has a mahogany edge while the rest of it is pine, something which I see on other puzzles of the 19th century. I place it within the first two decades of the 1800s. The cutting around the interlocking tabs is very much like John Wallis's style, but I would expect his name to be on it. This puzzle has not been so well loved, but it still retains value to me and to my collection. This ~47 piece puzzle with paper backing is 14" x 17.25".
